Jesus is the Christ, which means He is the Messiah, the Anointed One, the Holy One of God. Jesus was fully man and fully God. The Bible says, “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus lived on the Earth for approximately 33 years. He was tempted in all ways like man is, but yet never sinned. He was the perfect God-man. “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law” (Galatians 4:4).
Because Jesus is fully God and fully man, He was able to live a sinless life (God), serve as our substitute on the cross (man), and raise Himself victoriously on the third day (the Lord of Glory). Consider the repercussions of the profound miracle of the Incarnation. Jesus was fully God, and this enabled Him to live a life without sin. Without the sinless aspect, Jesus would not have provided atonement for sin. In addition, Jesus had to be fully man in order to die. Without the death, there would not have been propitiation (appeasement to God through sacrificial substitute of mankind) for sin. Both aspects of Deity and humanity were necessary. Perhaps you will draw closer to God as you consider the person and work of Christ.
Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. Mary was Jesus’ mother, but God was the Father. “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 1:18). “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 1:20).
Jesus was God in the flesh. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1, 14). "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory" (1 Tim. 3:16).
Jesus claimed to be God. Jesus claimed Deity on numerous occasions: Jesus says, “ye believe in God, believe also in me” (John 14:1). Jesus says, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is (present), and which was (past), and which is to come (future), the Almighty" (Rev. 1:8). "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last" (Rev. 22:13).
“Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:57-58).
"And he (Jesus) said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am, ye shall die in your sins (John 8:23-24).
Jesus in dialogue with Jews and Pharisees who constantly rejected Him, denying He was God. Jesus claims to them His words identify Him as God. "Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word...He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God" (John 8:43 & 47).
On another occasion, Jesus claims Deity to His disciples, “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.” – John 14:7-11
Jesus has existed since eternity past. Jesus is God. Jesus is the great “I am” which was a direct title used by God to identify Himself (see Exo. 3:14 in comparison with John 8:58). Notice Jesus' claims:
"I am" the Bread of Life (John 6:35).
"I am" the Light of the World (John 9:5).
"I am" the Door (John 10:9).
"I am" the Good Shepherd (John 10:11).
"I am" the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25).
"I am" the True Vine (John 15:1).
"I am" the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).
Jesus speaking, “I and my Father are one” (John 10:30). The Jews tried to stone Jesus because He claimed to be God. “The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God” (John 10:33). The Jews knew Jesus was claiming to be God, and Jesus never denied them.
“For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one” (1 John 5:7). We already saw that "the Word" was Jesus in John 1:14. God exists equally as three (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit).
When Jesus healed a man possessed with demons, He tells him to praise God for the good deed accomplished. The man goes and praises Jesus knowing Jesus is God who healed him. "Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him" (Luke 8:38-39).
Jesus' disciple Thomas acknowledged Jesus as God after His resurrection, boldly claiming "My Lord and my God." (John 20:28). Jesus received worship directly which is only permissible and reserved for God alone (see Exo. 20:1-5, 34:14, Rev. 19:10 in comparison with Matt. 2:11, 8:2, 9:18, 14:33, 15:25, 28:9, 17, Luke 24:52, John 9:38); if Jesus was not God, He would have stopped worship to Him, but He never does.
Jesus’ deity is seen throughout the New Testament. The Apostle Paul claimed, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). "For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he (God) hath purchased with his own blood" (Acts 20:27-28). The Apostle Peter claimed Jesus to be God, "Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (2 Pet. 1:1).
We know in Genesis 1:1 and Isaiah 44:24 it claims that God created the heavens and the earth, but we find in the New Testament that both Paul and John declared that Jesus created the universe (John 1:3, Col. 1:16–17). Even God the Father referred to Jesus as God when He quotes in the New Testament from Psalm 45:6, “But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom” (Heb. 1:8).
Praise Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World!! Have you trusted in the Savior Jesus to receive forgiveness of your sins and eternal life?
“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” – John 1:29
Salvation is only in God. "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else" (Isa. 45:22). Salvation is only in Jesus Christ. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name (Jesus Christ) under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus is God!
Denying Jesus is God is denying salvation! "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." - Phil. 2:9-11
